Last weekend I had the great pleasure of attending Celtic Spring at Heaven night club — an immersive, sensory, sex positive experience, extravagantly produced by London’s Fox&Badge.

For my first Fox&Badge party, I was delighted that Celtic Spring was the theme. The emphasis on mythology, ancient ways and female power was arousing, and well-suited to an event devoted to this kind of freedom.

There is something ancient, primordial and irrepressible about the rise of sexuality, sensuality and creativity happening in these circles across the world.

When we reclaim core aspects of the human experience that have been distorted and repressed for so long — sex, connection, and play….

When we create spaces where women (and men, and non-binary beings) are safe to be seen in the full spectrum of their true, eternal, sexual nature….

People come alive.

They smile.

They dance.

They flirt.

They create.

They open up.

They bring more of themselves to the moment.

You could feel the aliveness of ecstatic human presence bristling around you, walking through the intricately decorated rooms of Heaven’s iconic arches.

A long-standing haven for the sexual expression of the LGBTQ+ communities, the venue was transformed for this night only into a Celtic Cathedral — a techno-fuelled dance floor teeming with selkies, warriors, ghouls, earth nymphs and water sprites in lingerie and leather, exploring light touch kink and tantra in designated side rooms.

Connecting is easier, in places like this.

Where our erotic nature is normalised, and consent is formalised.

Fox & Badge is unique amongst London’s sex positive spaces, prioritising creativity as much sexuality.

This is a production crew who clearly live for co-created spectacle.

A spell-binding series of circus, theatre and symbolic performances featured:

  • A captivating aerial huntress swinging from a deer antler.

  • Mother Nature tying a caterpillar up in shibari rope, hoisted above the crowd’s gaze to be transformed into a butterfly.

  • Bare-breasted warrior women raising their voices along with their spears on stage, piercing the dance floor and invoking us all to join their chorus.

I could see devotion and delight in the faces of team members while assisting these performers, which pretty much sums up the level of commitment and camaraderie that goes into creating these high production spectacles, held around 2 or 3 times a year.

Woe betide if you try to attend without making an effort with your costume… you would miss out on your chance to express your own creativity, and become a moving part of this temporary, collective art installation.

At Celtic Spring, the raw power of female sexuality, emotionality and creativity was very much in the centre.

And it is indeed historically accurate to centre the beauty and power of women at a Celtic-themed event. We know that women were warriors and leaders in the ancient societies who lived on these lands — and now we are certainly alive in a time that is crying out for more reverence and respect for women.

Our world is suffering the consequences of diminishing the feminine — disconnecting from emotionality, vulnerability, nature-based spirituality, the liberatory freedom of authentic sexuality that isn’t controlled, distorted or performed.

We need spaces that are safe enough and permissive enough for this wild, magnetic, hypnotic force of feminine sensuality to reemerge in the world…. and take again her rightful place, being worshipped and adored as the goddess incarnate, bringer of life in so many ways.

This was far from my first sexy event — I’m used to arriving semi-clothed under a coat and ready to network on the edge of my comfort zone — yet I felt an unexpected level of tension in my body.

Every room had detailed, interactive art installations. Every person looked like a spectacular Celtic apparition. Fairy lit enchanted groves, writhing ghouls, fierce warriors.

Maybe it was overstimulation — so much to see, do, and experience.

Maybe it was expectation — thinking about who I might connect with and what might happen, rather than allowing myself to be fully present in the moment I was in, and allow liaisons to happen naturally.

I needed to get out of my head, and into my body.

I had two choices.

  1. I could take to the Celtic Cathedral and dance really hard to pumping, melodic techno surrounded by smiling, buzzing strangers until my system acclimatised.

  2. I could meet someone in the velvet relaxation area, and allow them to tie me up so my brain could switch off into the sweet void of subspace…. completely and utterly resetting my nervous system and anchoring me into not just my body, but a moment of collaboration and connection with this kind and playful human being, attending this event with his lovely wife .

I’m happy to say that the combination of both was incredibly effective.

Many people feel extreme apprehension before attending their first sex positive event. The first time I went to Torture Garden at Islington Metalworks, I had so much adrenaline in my body that I vomited while I was getting dressed.

I was in a real process of deshaming my sexuality and unpicking years of trauma at the time. My body held deep fear about stepping into a space where sex would now be… everywhere.

After building it all up so much, when I finally entered the club I was struck by how oddly innocent it all was…. how sweet and sincere the conversations with people could be, while they’re standing in front of you dressed in leather and straps.

It turns out there is something innocent when people give themselves permission to explore their authentic desires, in ways that are respectful to those around them.

Our true sexual natures have been shamed for so many years…. We’ve been conditioned to hide our bodies and constantly criticise them, to hide the fact that we ALL masturbate, to hide away our blossoming sexuality from our early teens….

Suddenly finding ourselves in a space where people dance semi-dressed, embodying their sexual energy, talking openly about their desires and their preferences…..

It can bring up pain. A visceral awareness of the parts of you that have never tasted this kind of liberation before.

It’s best to take it at your own pace.

You don’t need to take your scantily-clad costume off to feel liberated and inspired — you could just have a series of vulnerable conversations with people also buzzing their tits off about the fact that they made it here, and that they finally feel safe enough to be seen in their sexual energy.

Everything is an invitation.

And you get to choose what you say yes to.

So many people I speak to at these events were worried about coming to a party full of cool, creative, liberated people and not fitting in….

But everyone feels that way when you’re stepping into the unknown.

And then you arrive, and then you settle, and then you connect….

And you go home feeling like you were a part of something that night. You weren’t just a ticket buyer, a punter, another person out drinking.

You were a part of a community. A movement to reclaim connection, dance in states of true ecstasy, and experience the sacred expression of human sexuality.

Fox & Badge are creating a culture around their events. The same people come back again and again — in my experience, any community that facilitates this level of authenticity quickly becomes addictive, and sought-after.

There are opportunities for real growth and self exploration at events like this. You can explore your edges and gently tiptoe into your true desires, one night and one new friendship at a time.

You can find out who you are where you’re not bound by the conventions and limitations of our society.

And wake up the next morning, stunned by a peak experience and in need of mulling it over and integrating it all….

…whilst immediately planning your costume for the next party.
